Oommen Chandy an expression of Kerala politics: Rahul Gandhi

Thiruvananthapuram, July 18 — Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid a heartfelt tribute to former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on his death anniversary. He called Chandy “an expression of Kerala politics” and praised his deep connection with the people.
At a remembrance event in Kottayam, Gandhi said Chandy symbolized public service rooted in compassion, humility, and hard work. “Oommen Chandy wasn’t just a leader. He stood for Kerala’s political values — people-first, accessible, and deeply democratic,” said the Wayanad MP.
A Leader Who Stayed Close to the People
Chandy, who died in July 2023, served twice as Chief Minister and held several key portfolios. His political journey lasted over five decades. People admired him for his simple lifestyle, daily public interactions, and quick responses to citizen concerns.
“He always listened. Whether it was a policy issue or a personal request, Chandy responded with empathy and action,” Gandhi said.
A Model of People-Centered Leadership
Rahul Gandhi highlighted Chandy’s open-door approach. “He believed in staying close to people’s lives. That made him loved and trusted.”
Top Congress leaders in Kerala also honored Chandy’s memory. “Chandy sir showed us what meaningful politics looks like,” said Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan. KPCC president K. Sudhakaran echoed this sentiment.
His Values Continue to Guide Us
The Congress party has planned several tributes across Kerala. These include public meetings, charity work, and exhibitions about Chandy’s contributions.
“His leadership, based on empathy and accountability, is more important now than ever,” Gandhi said. He urged young politicians to follow Chandy’s example of service before power.
A Life That Touched Millions
Chandy was born in Puthuppally and won 11 straight elections from his home constituency. People trusted him deeply. He worked to uplift poor and marginalized communities and helped make Kerala more inclusive.
“In every village, people still share stories of how Chandy helped them — without delay or publicity,” said Gandhi.
Kerala continues to remember Oommen Chandy not just as a politician, but as a leader whose legacy of service lives on.
