NSUI’s Odisha unit head arrested for ‘raping’ 19-year-old student; suspended from post

Bhubaneswar, Odisha – July 21, 2025
In a major political shock in Odisha, police arrested Udit Pradhan, state president of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), late Sunday. He allegedly raped a 19-year-old engineering student in a hotel room earlier this year.
The case came to light after the student lodged a formal complaint with the Mancheswar police station. She claimed that Pradhan invited her to a hotel under false pretenses and drugged her before sexually assaulting her.
Survivor’s Shocking Statement
The 19-year-old woman stated that on March 18, Pradhan invited her to dinner to discuss career prospects. During the dinner, he allegedly spiked her drink. As a result, she began to feel dizzy and lost control of her senses.
She further said that Pradhan took her to a hotel room, where he raped her. He then threatened her to stay silent and used his political influence to intimidate her. After months of emotional struggle, she finally decided to approach the police and file a complaint.
Swift Police Response
Mancheswar police moved quickly. Officers detained Pradhan from his home and began questioning him for several hours. After collecting enough evidence, they officially arrested him.
Police charged him under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:
- Section 63 – Rape
- Section 117 – Criminal Intimidation
- Section 81 – Administering intoxicants with intent to harm
Investigators are reviewing hotel CCTV footage, the survivor’s medical reports, and statements from witnesses. Authorities are expected to present Pradhan before the court today.
Congress Reacts Immediately
The Congress party acted without delay. Varun Choudhary, national president of NSUI, suspended Pradhan from all party roles. He issued a public statement expressing strong condemnation.
“We stand by women’s rights and dignity. NSUI does not tolerate abuse of power. Udit Pradhan is suspended pending legal action,” Choudhary said.
To further investigate, the Odisha Congress unit formed a six-member team. Sasmita Behera, the state party vice-president, is leading the team. They plan to meet the survivor and gather full details within a week.
Political Tensions Rise
Opposition parties used the arrest to attack the Congress. Leaders from BJP and BJD criticized the NSUI leadership. They questioned how such a person held power in the party’s student wing.
BJP state spokesperson Anil Dwivedi called the incident disgraceful.
“This shows the rot in student politics under Congress. Young women deserve safety and respect,” he said.
In response, Congress leaders defended their decision. They highlighted their fast disciplinary action, unlike other parties where similar cases remain unresolved.
Public Anger Spills Over
The arrest triggered widespread outrage. Students and women’s groups held protests in Bhubaneswar and nearby campuses. They demanded justice for the survivor and a fast-track trial.
Activist Rekha Jena from Nirbhaya Samiti emphasized that this case should not be brushed aside.
“Too often, political power protects predators. We demand fair investigation and punishment,” she said.
On social media, hashtags like #JusticeForOdishaStudent and #SuspendUditPradhan began trending. People across India expressed anger and support for the survivor.
Root of the Problem: Power and Silence
While the Congress took quick action, experts say this case reflects a deeper issue. Many women face harassment but fear speaking out against powerful people. Social pressure, shame, and political influence often silence survivors.
Political experts argue that parties must go beyond reactionary measures. They should introduce strong internal checks, training on gender sensitivity, and safe reporting mechanisms.
What Lies Ahead
Police will present Pradhan in court today. Officials may seek judicial custody to continue the investigation. The Congress inquiry team will soon meet the survivor and prepare a report.
Women’s organizations have urged authorities to move the case to a fast-track court. They also demanded support and protection for the survivor during the legal process.
Conclusion
The arrest of Udit Pradhan is more than a political scandal. It highlights the vulnerability young women face—even in student organizations that claim to empower youth. While Congress responded quickly, the bigger challenge is creating long-term safeguards.
Justice must go beyond suspensions. It must lead to change that makes politics safer for everyone, especially women and students.ender equity at all levels.
