Pregabalin Misuse Sparks Major Crackdown in Punjab
New Delhi, April 4 – The Punjab government’s Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) seized pregabalin-based drug formulations worth nearly ₹6 crore in 2024. Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda informed the Lok Sabha that officials conducted the operation across 72 premises.
₹5.97 Crore Seized: The Scope of the Operation
Authorities confiscated pregabalin worth ₹5.97 crore, revealing widespread misuse and trafficking. This initiative is part of Punjab’s broader efforts to control pharmaceutical drug abuse.
Health Minister Nadda reported that officials took strict actions against violators. They canceled 12 licenses, suspended 46, and filed 11 legal complaints. Investigations are ongoing.
What Is Pregabalin and Why Is It Abused?
Doctors prescribe pregabalin to treat epilepsy, anxiety, and nerve pain. However, many abuse it for its sedative and euphoric effects.
Easy access through unauthorized sales and unethical prescriptions has worsened the problem. Officials now stress the urgent need for stricter supply chain monitoring.
Government’s Response and Preventive Measures
On February 28, Punjab’s FDA issued fresh directives. All manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers must report sales beyond a certain limit to local Drugs Control Officers.
The order also applies to six other commonly abused drugs. Authorities aim to improve traceability and accountability in pharmaceutical distribution.
Regulators are enforcing stricter oversight under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. State Licensing Authorities (SLAs) are conducting inspections, suspending operations, and revoking licenses when necessary.
Drugs Consultative Committee’s Review and Recommendations
The central government is also taking action. The Drugs Consultative Committee (DCC) reviewed the issue in its 65th meeting (December 2024).
After discussions, the committee proposed adding pregabalin to Schedule H1 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945. If implemented, pharmacies can only sell pregabalin with a doctor’s prescription, and they must record all sales.
India’s Growing Prescription Drug Abuse Problem
India is witnessing a rise in prescription drug addiction. While alcohol and illegal narcotics remain major concerns, misuse of medications like tramadol, codeine-based cough syrups, and pregabalin is increasing.
