Tripura Sundari Express Arms Seizure: 8 Pistols and 16 Magazines Found

On May 8, 2025, a routine security check on the Tripura Sundari Express at Agartala railway station uncovered a significant arms smuggling attempt. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) seized eight pistols and 16 magazines from two unclaimed bags aboard the train, which had arrived from Firozpur, Punjab, around 4 a.m.

Seizure of Arms from Tripura Sundari Express

The firearms were wrapped in brown cello tape and hidden beneath personal belongings, such as clothes and medicines. These pistols were smaller than the typical 9mm models used by law enforcement, which raised suspicions about their intended use. Along with the pistols, the authorities found 16 empty magazines, further adding to the mystery of the incident.

The discovery has prompted an immediate investigation, but no arrests have been made yet. The GRP has filed a case against unknown individuals. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the station in hopes of identifying the perpetrators. Authorities are also coordinating with other agencies to prevent future attempts to smuggle firearms into the region.

Growing Concerns of Arms Smuggling in Tripura

The arms seizure sheds light on the increasing arms smuggling issue in the Northeast, especially in Tripura. The state shares a border with Bangladesh, which has long been a hotspot for cross-border illegal activities, including arms trafficking. Over recent months, authorities have arrested individuals involved in such smuggling operations, which have fueled concerns about the safety of transportation networks.

Increased Security Measures

Following the arms discovery, the RPF and GRP have strengthened security at Agartala railway station and along the India-Bangladesh border. The authorities are working together to prevent similar incidents in the future and enhance overall security in the region.
