Burglars target BJP office in CM’s constituency in Goa

Panaji, Goa – May 15, 2025:
In a shocking incident that has raised eyebrows across Goa’s political circles, burglars broke into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office located in Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s constituency of Sanquelim. The break-in, which reportedly occurred late Tuesday night, has triggered a police investigation and prompted questions about political security in the state.

What Happened?

According to police sources, unidentified individuals gained forced entry into the BJP’s local office in Sanquelim, which serves as the political nerve center for the Chief Minister’s constituency. Early reports suggest that important documents and some electronic items, including a computer and printer, were taken. Local CCTV footage is being examined to identify the suspects.

The incident came to light on Wednesday morning when BJP workers arrived and noticed signs of forced entry. A formal complaint was lodged at the Sanquelim police station, and forensic teams were dispatched to collect evidence.

No Cash Stolen, But Documents Missing

A party official speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed that no cash was kept on the premises. However, some confidential papers and digital devices were missing, which has intensified speculation about the motive behind the crime.

“This doesn’t appear to be a random theft. The burglars seemed to know what they were looking for. It’s concerning that this happened in the CM’s home turf,” said a senior BJP functionary from North Goa.

Political Reactions

The incident has quickly turned political, with opposition parties questioning the law-and-order situation in the state. The Goa Congress, while condemning the break-in, also criticized the BJP government for failing to secure even its own offices.

“If the ruling party’s office in the Chief Minister’s own constituency is not safe, what can the common citizen expect?” said Goa Congress President Amit Patkar. “This reflects the growing insecurity across Goa.”

AAP Goa’s local unit also demanded a swift and transparent investigation, suggesting that internal political rivalry could not be ruled out.

CM Pramod Sawant Responds

Chief Minister Sawant, who also serves as the Sanquelim MLA, addressed the incident during a media briefing. “Police are investigating the matter seriously. I have asked them to look into all angles, including political sabotage or targeted theft,” he said.

Sawant also emphasized that no sensitive state documents were stored in the local party office. “Let the police do their job. I trust they will get to the bottom of it soon,” he added.

Investigation Underway

Sanquelim police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for trespassing, theft, and criminal breach of trust. Preliminary investigation indicates that the burglars may have had prior knowledge of the office’s layout.

“We are analyzing surveillance footage from nearby shops and buildings. It’s too early to determine the motive, but we are not ruling out any possibilities,” said Inspector Pradeep Gawas.

Security Concerns in Focus

This incident has cast a spotlight on the broader issue of political security in Goa, especially with the state gearing up for local body elections later this year. The break-in has also fueled rumors of internal tensions within the BJP, although party leaders have dismissed such claims.

Political analysts say the episode may affect public perception, especially in a high-profile constituency like Sanquelim. “It’s symbolic. A party office being targeted in the CM’s own area raises serious concerns, not just about security but also political stability,” said Goa-based political commentator Anil Naik.
