10 ‘militants’ killed in Manipur’s Chandel near Myanmar border

In a decisive security operation conducted near the India-Myanmar border, at least ten militants were killed in Manipur’s Chandel district on May 14, 2025. The Assam Rifles launched a targeted raid in the remote area close to New Samtal village in Khengjoy Tehsil, a hotspot for insurgent activity.

According to sources, the militants opened fire as security forces approached their hideout, triggering an intense gunfight that lasted several hours. The operation concluded with the elimination of the militants, though their precise identities and group affiliations remain under investigation.

This incident forms part of an ongoing pattern of armed conflicts along the border region. Over recent months, various insurgent groups have clashed over territorial control, exacerbating tensions and undermining peace efforts. Notably, clashes among factions like the Kuki National Army (KNA), People’s Liberation Army (PLA), and Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) have resulted in significant casualties.

In a concurrent development, Assam Rifles personnel recovered a substantial cache of weapons and explosives abandoned by fleeing militants in Chandel district. The seized arsenal included assault rifles, mortar bombs, ammunition, and communication devices, indicating the militants’ preparedness for prolonged armed engagements.

The region remains volatile due to its proximity to the porous international border, which facilitates cross-border insurgent movements and complicates security measures. The recent operation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Indian security forces in maintaining stability and combating insurgency in northeastern border areas.

Officials have reaffirmed their commitment to curbing militant activities and restoring peace through coordinated counter-insurgency efforts. Investigations are underway to gather intelligence on the militant networks involved and to prevent further incidents in this sensitive zone.
