‘Design of temple at birthplace of Sita now complete’: Bihar’s Punaura Dham redevelopment takes shape
Sitamarhi, Bihar – A major cultural milestone has been reached in Bihar as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar unveiled the finalized design for a grand temple at Punaura Dham, the sacred birthplace of Goddess Sita. The project aims to transform this holy site into a world-class spiritual and cultural destination.
A Temple Honoring Sita’s Legacy
The new Jagat Janani Maa Janaki Mandir will stand as a tribute to Sita, one of the most respected figures in the Ramayana. A Noida-based firm, also involved in designing the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, created the temple’s architecture. The structure will combine traditional Mithila artistry with modern engineering to accommodate thousands of pilgrims.
Its lotus-shaped dome, intricate carvings, and spiritual ambiance will reflect the divine character of Janaki Mata. The temple will not only preserve Sita’s story but also showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Mithila region.
Punaura Dham: A Place of Faith and Tradition
Punaura Dham, located just 5 kilometers from Sitamarhi, holds immense spiritual value. Devotees believe this site is where Mother Sita was born. For years, the place received pilgrims but lacked proper infrastructure. The current redevelopment effort aims to change that entirely.
In December 2023, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar laid the project’s foundation stone. The government allocated ₹120 crore for the project, with ₹72 crore reserved for the first phase. This plan is more than a construction project—it represents Bihar’s dedication to restoring its mythological roots.
What the Redevelopment Includes
The redevelopment of Punaura Dham will offer much more than just a temple. It’s a complete spiritual experience with multiple features designed for comfort, learning, and devotion:
1. Parikrama Path
A covered walkway will allow devotees to complete parikrama (circumambulation) regardless of weather. It will protect pilgrims from sun and rain while they perform this sacred ritual.

These two gardens will showcase important scenes from Sita’s life and the childhood of her sons, Lav and Kush. The gardens will include sculptures, pathways, and story panels to educate visitors.
3. 3D Animation Centre
The site will include a 3D hall where visitors can watch animated stories from Sita’s life. This feature aims to engage younger audiences and help them connect with the epic in a modern way.
4. Sitakund Beautification
Sitakund, a sacred pond near the temple, is undergoing a major cleanup and landscaping. Ritual bathing areas, lighting, and seating will make the pond more welcoming and accessible.
5. Modern Pilgrim Facilities
Pilgrims will benefit from improved services like dedicated parking, resting areas, food kiosks, drinking water stations, and clean restrooms. These facilities will enhance the visitor experience, especially during festival seasons.
Strong Support from State and Community
The project has received strong backing from the Bihar government. During the Janaki Navami celebrations in May 2025, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha announced that the construction agency would work free of cost. This generous offer reflects the commitment of religious and community leaders.
To support the growing needs of the temple complex, the state is also acquiring about 50 acres of additional land. A trust has been formed to manage the temple’s construction and operations. This team will ensure the project follows timelines and maintains transparency.
