Two arrested for assaulting tribal youth in Kerala

Two men have been arrested for brutally assaulting a 19-year-old tribal youth in Kerala’s Attappadi region. This incident, which took place on May 24, 2025, has sparked outrage and renewed calls to protect tribal communities from violence and discrimination.

What Happened?

The victim, Shiju, belongs to a tribal community in Attappadi, Palakkad district. According to reports, he slipped near a moving pickup van driven by Vishnudas (31) and accompanied by Reji Mathew (21). The driver and his assistant accused Shiju of blocking their path, which led to an argument.

Eyewitnesses say the confrontation quickly turned violent. Vishnudas and Reji tied Shiju to a roadside electric pole and beat him. Shockingly, they recorded the attack and shared the video on social media, igniting public outrage.

Passersby saw the assault and rescued Shiju. They rushed him to the Agali Community Health Centre for treatment. Since his injuries required more care, doctors transferred him to Kottathara Tribal Taluk Speciality Hospital.

Arrest and Charges

After the video went viral, police acted quickly. Vishnudas and Reji fled but were caught in Kumali, Tamil Nadu. The police charged them under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. They also face charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for the assault.

Tribal rights activists praised the swift arrests. They say this case highlights the persistent threats tribal communities face despite legal protections.

Why This Matters

Tribal people in India often struggle with poverty and discrimination. Even though the Constitution grants them special protections, they face social and economic challenges, especially in rural areas like Attappadi.

This case reminds many of the 2018 lynching of Madhu, another tribal youth in Kerala who suffered violence. Such incidents show that discrimination against tribals is still a serious problem.

Human rights groups urge the government to enforce laws better. They want police and officials to receive training on tribal issues. They also call for more resources for tribal welfare programs.

The Role of Social Media

The video of the assault spread widely online. While sharing such footage is disturbing, it helped alert the public and authorities to the crime quickly.

Social media can help bring justice by exposing wrongdoing. But it also raises concerns about victims’ privacy and dignity. Sharing violent content can traumatize victims and their families. So, reporters and users must handle such material carefully.

Community and Government Response

Local officials condemned the assault and promised strict action. Kerala’s government, known for progressive policies, now faces pressure to improve tribal safety.

Tribal leaders called for unity against violence. They stressed education and awareness to reduce discrimination.

Several NGOs stepped forward to support Shiju’s recovery. They offered medical help, legal aid, and counseling. Their role remains vital in connecting tribal communities with government support.

Moving Forward

The arrest of Vishnudas and Reji is a reminder that tribal communities need stronger protections. Violence and discrimination still affect many in India, despite laws to prevent it.

Kerala can lead efforts to protect tribal rights through effective law enforcement and inclusive policies. It needs to ensure tribal voices influence decisions affecting their lives.

Only with ongoing commitment from government, civil society, and citizens can India break the cycle of tribal violence. Tribal youth like Shiju deserve safety, respect, and opportunities to thrive.
