Rajasthan party renews demand for a Bhil Pradesh for tribals, BJP leaders slam ‘divisive’ move

Udaipur/Jaipur, July 17, 2025 — The demand for a separate tribal state, Bhil Pradesh, has resurfaced in Rajasthan, with a regional tribal party reigniting its call for political and administrative autonomy for tribal communities. The renewed push has triggered a political storm, with BJP leaders calling the proposal “divisive and unconstitutional.”
Bhil Pradesh Demand Gains Momentum
The Bhartiya Adivasi Party (BAP), a growing political force among tribal communities in southern Rajasthan, raised the demand at a massive rally held in Dungarpur this week. The party leaders argued that the tribal populations of southern Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra continue to face systemic neglect, exploitation, and underdevelopment despite decades of promises.
“Our people need a state where they can govern themselves and protect their culture, forests, and future,” said BAP president Rameshwar Bhil. “Bhil Pradesh is not a threat to India—it is a step toward justice for the Adivasis.”
Political Backlash from BJP Leaders
However, BJP leaders have strongly condemned the move, calling it a threat to national unity. Rajasthan BJP President C.P. Joshi said, “This demand is not just unrealistic but dangerous. It is meant to divide people on ethnic lines and disrupt peace in tribal areas. We cannot allow anyone to challenge the integrity of our state.”
Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal also criticized the call, stating, “India is a united nation. Creating new states based on tribal or caste identities will set a bad precedent. The focus should be on inclusive development, not separatist politics.”
Congress Cautious, Yet Supportive of Tribal Rights
The Congress Party has taken a more cautious approach. While stopping short of endorsing the Bhil Pradesh demand, state Congress leaders acknowledged the legitimate grievances of the tribal communities. Senior leader and former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said, “We support tribal welfare and empowerment. There is a need to listen to their concerns and address systemic issues through policy, not partition.”
Tribal Voices Seek Recognition
The Bhils, one of the largest tribal groups in India, are spread across multiple states but have often complained about lack of political representation and autonomy. Advocates of Bhil Pradesh envision a tribal-majority state carved out of districts in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
“Governments only remember us during elections,” said Rekha Bhuria, a tribal teacher in Banswara. “Our schools, roads, and hospitals are in a poor state. If Bhil Pradesh ensures our children get a future, why not demand it?”
A History of Demands and Delays
The idea of Bhil Pradesh is not new. It has been floated periodically since the 1950s but never gained traction in mainstream politics. However, growing tribal discontent, increasing political mobilization, and a pan-tribal identity across state borders have given new life to the movement.
What Lies Ahead?
Political analysts suggest the demand may not lead to actual statehood in the near future, but it could influence electoral politics in tribal belt constituencies. “Even if Bhil Pradesh doesn’t materialize, the issue forces mainstream parties to address tribal neglect more seriously,” said political scientist Dr. Anita Rawat from Udaipur University.
As the 2028 general elections inch closer, tribal parties and their demands may become a crucial factor in shaping alliances and agendas in central India.
