‘See huge blue ocean opportunity in India for regional jets, perfect fit between turboprops, larger planes’: Embraer’s Raul Villaron

New Delhi, June 2025 — India’s aviation market is soaring, and Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer sees a clear path forward. With rising demand for regional travel, Embraer believes its jets can fill a critical gap in the country’s aviation network.

Raul Villaron, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Embraer Asia-Pacific, recently outlined the company’s vision. Speaking at an aviation summit, he called India a “blue ocean opportunity” for regional jets. These aircraft, he said, perfectly fit between short-haul turboprops and larger narrow-body jets like the Airbus A320.

“We see India as one of the most promising growth frontiers,” Villaron said. “There’s a huge need to connect smaller cities. Regional jets offer the right size and economics for these routes.”

India’s Growing Aviation Market

India is now the third-largest domestic aviation market, just behind the U.S. and China. This growth comes from a rising middle class, increased business travel, and government support through programs like UDAN. These efforts aim to connect underserved airports across the country.

Low-cost airlines have successfully connected metro cities. However, regional routes often remain limited or require long layovers. Embraer believes its regional jets can solve this problem.

The Role of Regional Jets

Turboprops such as the ATR 72 dominate regional skies. They work well for very short flights but are slower and less comfortable. On the other hand, aircraft like the A320 serve dense routes but are too large for many regional sectors.

Embraer’s jets, including the E175 and E190-E2, carry 76 to 114 passengers. This makes them ideal for medium-demand routes. Airlines can use them where turboprops are too slow and narrow-bodies are too big.

“These jets are faster and more comfortable than turboprops,” Villaron noted. “They also allow airlines to open new routes with less risk.”

India’s Airport Infrastructure Fits the Plan

India’s airport network is growing, but many smaller airfields still have short runways and limited facilities. That’s where Embraer sees an advantage. Its jets can take off and land on shorter runways, making them perfect for regional airports.

Many states like Odisha, Assam, and Uttar Pradesh are expanding airport infrastructure. Embraer wants to help link these regions directly to major hubs. This can save time and fuel local economies.

Efficiency and Sustainability

The E2 series is the latest version of Embraer’s jets. They are fuel-efficient and emit less carbon. For example, the E190-E2 burns up to 17% less fuel than older models.

With India focusing on greener aviation, these jets offer a smart solution. Airlines want to cut fuel costs and reduce emissions. Embraer’s E2 jets can help achieve both goals.

“Airlines care about cost, emissions, and noise,” Villaron explained. “The E2 jets meet all of those needs.”

Talking with Indian Airlines

Embraer’s commercial fleet in India is still small. But the company is talking with several Indian carriers. These include both regional operators and new players entering the market.

Airlines like Star Air and FlyBig already fly small jets and plan to expand. Embraer believes these airlines could benefit from a fleet upgrade. The jets also work for cargo or hybrid use.

“We’re in talks with many partners,” Villaron said. “It’s not just about selling planes. We want to help build the full ecosystem for regional air travel.”

Challenges and Opportunities

There are still some hurdles. These include high operational costs and limited aircraft maintenance support. But Embraer is addressing these issues.

The company plans to invest in after-sales service, pilot training, and partnerships in India. It may also explore local parts sourcing if the market grows. Recent policy changes have made it easier for aerospace firms to expand in India.

“We’re here for the long term,” Villaron added. “India is a strategic priority.”

Conclusion: A Clear Flight Path Ahead

India’s air travel growth now goes beyond big cities. As demand rises in smaller towns, airlines need the right aircraft to serve them. Embraer’s regional jets offer a smart, efficient way to connect these markets.

“India doesn’t just need more flights,” Villaron said. “It needs smarter networks and right-sized planes.”

With regional connectivity set to play a big role in India’s future, Embraer is preparing to take off.
