3 drown as flash floods hit many areas in Jammu

Jammu, June 27, 2025
Three people died on Thursday as flash floods swept through many parts of Jammu following relentless rainfall. Several areas, especially low-lying ones, are submerged. Property was damaged, roads were blocked, and locals were left stranded.

Officials from the Jammu & Kashmir Disaster Management Authority confirmed that the victims included two people from Rajouri and one from Reasi. All three were swept away while trying to cross flooded streams.

Rainfall Triggers Widespread Flooding

Jammu received heavy rain overnight. Some areas saw over 150 mm of rainfall in just six hours. The sudden downpour caused nearby streams and nullahs to overflow.

Videos showed water rushing through village lanes. The floods entered homes, damaged vehicles, and carried away livestock. Many residents fled to higher ground, carrying their families and belongings.

Three Lives Lost, Rescue Underway

In Reasi, a man in his 30s tried to help others evacuate. Unfortunately, a strong water current swept him away. Rescue teams later recovered his body.

In Rajouri, two others died while walking near a swollen stream. They were caught by surprise when water surged.

Rescue teams, including police and SDRF personnel, quickly responded. They used boats in submerged zones and set up medical support at key locations. Helicopters are on standby in case of worsening conditions.

District Commissioner Sachin Tiwari said, “We have rescued over 50 people so far. Relief materials like food and water are being distributed.”

Urban Areas Hit Hard

Waterlogging was reported in several parts of Jammu city. Poor drainage made the situation worse. The Jammu-Pathankot highway was blocked for a few hours after floodwater and debris flooded the road near Samba.

Schools and colleges in affected districts stayed closed on Friday. Authorities took this step to prevent any further accidents.

Administration Issues Alerts

The India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for Jammu. Officials warned of more rainfall and the risk of landslides in hilly areas.

Authorities urged people to stay indoors, especially in flood-prone zones. Control rooms are now active in every district, responding to emergency calls.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his condolences to the victims’ families. He assured full support from the administration. “Our teams are working to ensure timely relief and safety,” he stated.

Experts Warn of Poor Urban Planning

Experts have raised concerns about Jammu’s flood preparedness. Dr. Rehan Wani, a hydrology expert at Jammu University, said, “Drainage systems are inadequate. Illegal construction blocks natural water flow.”

He added that unchecked building activities have made even routine rain dangerous. “We need better planning to protect lives,” he emphasized.

Relief Camps and Initial Damage Reports

Authorities have set up temporary shelters in schools and public halls. Displaced families are receiving food, water, and basic medical help.

Early reports suggest damage to over 200 houses. Three bridges collapsed in rural belts. Officials have started assessing losses for compensation.

Final Word

The flash floods in Jammu have once again revealed the region’s vulnerability to sudden weather events. Poor infrastructure and rapid urbanization continue to make matters worse.

As the rain continues, rescue and relief efforts remain top priorities. Authorities are urging citizens to follow advisories and avoid travel near rivers and streams.
