Operation Sankalp: 22 Naxalites killed in encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh

Dantewada, Chhattisgarh – May 8, 2025:
Security forces in Chhattisgarh struck a major blow to left-wing extremism on Tuesday. They killed 22 Naxalites in a high-intensity gunfight during Operation Sankalp in Dantewada. The operation involved coordinated efforts by the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF), and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Well-Planned Offensive in Dense Forest
The forces launched the operation after gathering intelligence for several weeks. They acted on reports of a Maoist gathering near the Chhattisgarh–Telangana border, in the Gonderas forest. Over 400 personnel moved into the area before dawn.
By 5 a.m., they came under heavy fire. A fierce gun battle followed and continued for several hours. When it ended, the team had eliminated 22 Maoists and seized weapons, explosives, and rebel literature.
Top Maoist Leaders Among the Dead
Officials suspect several high-ranking Maoist leaders were among those killed. One of the dead may be Shankar, a senior commander with over 30 cases. The police are verifying their identities.
Chhattisgarh DGP Ashok Juneja praised the operation. “This marks a key success in our fight against extremism,” he said. “Our forces carried out the mission with courage and accuracy.”
Forces Face Casualties
Two DRG jawans died in the gunfight, and five others sustained injuries. Helicopters transported the injured to Raipur. Doctors say they are now in stable condition. The two martyrs had served in multiple anti-Maoist missions.
State and Centre React
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai commended the operation. “Our brave personnel continue to protect the people of Chhattisgarh,” he said. He also promised support for the families of the martyrs.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated the forces. In a social media post, he said, “We are committed to eliminating Naxalism. Our jawans’ bravery will not be forgotten.”
Locals Share Mixed Reactions
Residents of nearby villages expressed relief and concern. Some felt safer after the encounter, while others feared possible retaliation. A school teacher said, “We are glad the government is taking strong steps, but we worry about revenge attacks.”
Authorities have increased security in the region to prevent backlash.
Tactical Shift in Strategy
The state’s new approach focuses on intelligence-based strikes rather than routine patrols. Operation Sankalp shows how targeted missions can break Maoist strongholds. Over the past year, forces have killed or captured more than 80 Naxals across the state.
Security officials believe these operations disrupt Maoist leadership and reduce recruitment. They also rely on local support to gather timely information.
The Ongoing Naxal Challenge
Chhattisgarh, especially Bastar, has long faced Maoist violence. Rebel groups claim to fight for tribal rights. However, they often target civilians, police, and public infrastructure.
The government has launched several development projects in Maoist-affected areas. These include roads, schools, and mobile networks. Officials say long-term peace depends on both security action and social progress.
What Lies Ahead
Security experts agree that the battle against Naxalism requires more than force. A senior intelligence officer said, “We need to win trust through governance and opportunity. That’s how we’ll end this conflict.”
Authorities are urging villagers to help identify Maoist operatives. They also encourage rebels to surrender and join rehabilitation programs. The state promises safety and support for those who lay down arms.
Operation Sankalp has sent a strong message to insurgent groups. The government is determined to reclaim peace in Chhattisgarh’s remotest corners — through strength, justice, and development.
