Arrests in Northeast Over Social Media Posts Following Pahalgam Terror Attack

April 28, 2025 | India

The Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 has sparked widespread reactions across India, particularly in the northeastern states. The violence left 26 people dead and prompted a swift response from authorities. As a result, 25 individuals have been arrested in Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya for allegedly sharing pro-Pakistan or anti-national content on social media.

Growing Tensions in Assam and Tripura

Authorities in Assam have arrested 16 people in connection to the social media posts. Tripura saw eight arrests, and Meghalaya recorded one. Those detained include a sitting MLA, students, a journalist, and even retired teachers.

The arrest of Aminul Islam, an MLA from the AIUDF, is one of the most notable. Islam allegedly made controversial statements on social media about the attack, which led to his detention. A woman from Assam’s Golaghat district was also arrested for her anti-national remarks related to the incident.

Chief Minister’s Strong Response

In Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the state’s tough stance on anti-national activities. Sarma stated that authorities would use the National Security Act (NSA) against anyone who supports Pakistan or promotes terrorism.

“We will not tolerate any act that harms national security,” Sarma declared. He vowed that those spreading hate online would face strict punishment.

Focus on Cyber Surveillance

The government has intensified cyber surveillance to monitor social media for inflammatory posts. The Home Ministry instructed state governments to track online activities, especially in sensitive areas like the Northeast. Authorities are determined to prevent communal tensions from escalating.

Balancing National Security with Rights

While security concerns remain paramount, human rights groups have raised concerns. They warn against misusing laws like the NSA to suppress free speech. Legal experts argue that while national security must be protected, the government should also safeguard constitutional rights.

Continuing Investigations

The investigation into the Pahalgam attack is ongoing. Authorities have not ruled out further arrests related to both the terror attack and the online support it allegedly generated. As the nation mourns the victims, tensions remain high.
