‘Person holding public office expected to uphold certain standards’: SC to MP minister over remarks on Col Sofiya Qureshi

New Delhi, May 15, 2025 — The Supreme Court of India reprimanded Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister Uday Pratap Singh for his controversial remarks about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. The court stressed that public officials must maintain decorum and respect constitutional values.
On Wednesday, the apex court stated that elected representatives should speak carefully. It added, “A person holding public office must uphold certain standards in public discourse. Remarks that harm the dignity of those serving the nation, especially armed forces personnel, are unacceptable.”
What Happened?
The controversy started after the MP minister made disrespectful comments about Col. Sofiya Qureshi. She is a decorated Indian Army officer known for her leadership in several international peacekeeping missions.
Singh’s comments appeared misogynistic and disrespectful. Civil society, opposition leaders, and veterans condemned the remarks. Following this, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) demanded action and a public apology from the minister.
Supreme Court’s View on Free Speech and Responsibility
The court acknowledged the importance of free speech in a democracy. However, it clarified, “Freedom of expression does not allow insulting or degrading others.” Justice Sanjiv Khanna, heading the bench, said ministers must set examples in public speech. “Their words carry weight and consequences,” he added.
The court also recognized Col. Qureshi’s service and said, “Vilifying such individuals is unacceptable and demoralizes the armed forces.”
Legal and Political Impact
The court issued a notice to the MP government. It asked if they conducted any inquiry and if they plan to discipline the minister. The court warned that hate speech and character attacks cannot hide behind political rhetoric.
Experts believe this ruling may set a precedent. It could lead to stricter codes of conduct for ministers and legislators.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) and the Ministry of Defence also reacted. NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma demanded a public apology and legal action against the minister.
Public Support for Col. Qureshi
Social media users widely supported Col. Sofiya Qureshi. Hashtags like #StandWithSofiya and #RespectOurSoldiers trended across platforms. Citizens, veterans, and influencers condemned the minister’s statements and praised the Supreme Court for defending the armed forces’ dignity.
Col. Qureshi told the press, “I serve this nation with honor and discipline. I hope public representatives do the same.”
