Strengthening Diplomatic Ties Between India and Slovakia
Slovakia has recently shown strong support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This endorsement came during the state visit of President Droupadi Murmu to Slovakia, marking an important milestone in the countries’ diplomatic relations.
Slovakia Supports India’s UNSC Bid

At a joint press conference, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini confirmed Slovakia’s full backing of India’s UNSC aspirations. He highlighted the growing influence of India on the global stage and reaffirmed Slovakia’s commitment to support India’s bid. Both nations share goals of promoting peace, security, and cooperation within the United Nations framework.
Acknowledging Slovakia’s Support During the Ukraine Crisis
President Murmu expressed gratitude for Slovakia’s efforts in evacuating Indian students from Ukraine during the conflict. Slovakia’s quick and generous response marked a significant turning point in their bilateral relationship. Murmu stated, “India will always remember Slovakia’s cooperation and generosity, which strengthens our bond as true partners and friends.”
Expanding Cooperation Beyond Security
The leaders discussed a variety of ways to strengthen cooperation beyond security. Key areas of focus included trade, investment, defense, digital technology, and space exploration. Both sides emphasized the importance of deepening ties and encouraging greater people-to-people exchanges to foster long-term collaboration.
Growth in Trade and Investment
In recent years, trade between India and Slovakia has grown rapidly. Bilateral trade tripled over the past five years, reaching EUR 1.3 billion. Indian investments, including the Tata Jaguar Land Rover assembly plant in Nitra, have played a pivotal role in this growth. Slovakia is eager to attract more Indian businesses to its expanding market.
Strengthening the Strategic Partnership
President Murmu’s visit was the first by an Indian head of state to Slovakia in nearly 30 years. The two countries are committed to further enhancing their strategic partnership. They plan to focus on science, technology, defense, and global cooperation. The visit also led to agreements aimed at improving exchanges in small and medium-sized enterprises, fostering economic and cultural ties.
Shared Vision for Global Cooperation and Peace
India and Slovakia share a vision for a more cooperative, peaceful world. Slovakia’s support for India’s UNSC bid reflects the ongoing evolution of their relationship. Both nations will continue to work together on global platforms to promote peace, security, and sustainable development.
