PM Modi to inaugurate Vizhinjam international seaport on May 2

Vizhinjam International Seaport Set for Inauguration on May 2 by PM Modi
In a major boost to India’s maritime ambitions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Vizhinjam International Seaport on May 2, marking the beginning of a new era in coastal infrastructure. Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and other dignitaries will also attend the event.
India’s First Deepwater Transshipment Port
Located near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, Vizhinjam port offers deep natural draft and cutting-edge infrastructure. The port has been developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) in partnership with the Kerala government. It’s designed to position India as a significant force in global maritime trade.
Currently, over 75% of India’s transshipped cargo is routed through foreign ports like Colombo, Singapore, and Dubai. Vizhinjam’s proximity to international shipping routes will allow India to handle a large portion of this cargo domestically.
From Long-Pending Dream to Reality
The vision for Vizhinjam Port first emerged more than 30 years ago. However, political disagreements, environmental concerns, and administrative delays kept the project on hold for decades. The tide finally turned when the state partnered with the Adani Group and gave the project new life.
Construction continued despite various setbacks including protests, natural challenges, and the global pandemic. With Phase 1 ready, Vizhinjam is now prepared to welcome its first wave of commercial activity.
What Sets Vizhinjam Apart
Vizhinjam’s biggest strength lies in its natural sea depth of over 20 meters, enabling it to accommodate Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). Unlike other ports that require constant dredging, Vizhinjam’s natural depth saves costs and minimizes environmental damage.
In addition, the port boasts modern equipment, container tracking systems, and strong road and rail connectivity. These advantages will help streamline trade, reduce shipping costs, and attract major global shipping lines.
Economic Impact and Strategic Benefits
Vizhinjam is expected to fuel economic growth by generating thousands of direct and indirect jobs, improving logistics efficiency, and drawing new investments into Kerala. Exporters and importers across India will benefit from reduced transit time and lower costs.
From a strategic perspective, Vizhinjam gives India greater control over shipping operations in the Indian Ocean. It adds a secure, high-capacity port at the southern tip of the country — a critical location as global competition in maritime trade intensifies.
Local Excitement and Preparation
The people of Thiruvananthapuram and nearby villages are eagerly preparing for the big day. Many residents see the port as a turning point that will uplift the region economically. While some members of the fishing community initially feared displacement, many now support the project after receiving training, job opportunities, and compensation.
Murugan, a fisherman from Vizhinjam, shared, “At first, we were unsure. But now, my nephew works at the site, and more jobs are coming. We’re hopeful.”
Shops and local institutions plan to close briefly on May 2 so residents can witness the historic inauguration. Authorities are coordinating large-scale security arrangements to manage the crowd and visiting officials.
Political Unity for Progress
Despite ideological differences, both the central and state governments have worked together on this project. The Kerala government and the Centre have praised each other for their cooperation in bringing Vizhinjam to life.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan recently said, “Vizhinjam belongs to the entire nation. It’s a milestone not just for Kerala, but for India.”
Private shipping firms and logistics companies are also showing strong interest. Many have begun initial talks or signed agreements to use Vizhinjam as a key hub in their supply chains.
Future Plans and Vision
The May 2 inauguration is only the beginning. APSEZ plans to expand the port in phases, building more terminals, logistics parks, and warehouse zones. These will support India’s growing trade volume and create long-term development in the region.
Educational institutions and training centers are launching port-related courses to prepare skilled workers for the new ecosystem. Support industries such as transport, catering, and housing are also expected to flourish.
A National Achievement with Global Potential
Vizhinjam International Seaport is more than just another infrastructure project. It stands as a symbol of India’s determination to build world-class trade facilities and reduce dependence on foreign ports. It showcases how collaboration between governments and private enterprise can bring powerful, lasting change.
For the people of Vizhinjam, it’s a source of pride. For India, it’s a step forward in becoming a self-reliant maritime powerhouse.
