In Wayanad, students of a landslide-hit school record 100% pass rate in board exams

Students Overcome Tragedy to Achieve 100% Pass Rate in Board Exams

In a powerful demonstration of resilience, students from Government Vocational Higher Secondary School (GVHSS) in Vellarmala, Wayanad, have achieved a 100% pass rate in the 2025 SSLC (Class 10) board exams. This remarkable accomplishment came despite the devastating landslide in July 2024, which claimed the lives of 298 people, including 32 students from the school.

The Impact of the Landslide

The landslide severely damaged the school, forcing it to temporarily relocate to Meppadi, about 13 kilometers away. Tragically, seven students from the Class 10 batch were among those lost, leaving a lasting emotional impact on the school community. Despite these challenges, students and staff worked hard to continue the academic journey.

Rebuilding Amidst Challenges

After the disaster, the school focused on not only continuing lessons but also helping students cope with the psychological trauma. Dedicated teachers provided academic support, while counseling sessions helped students heal emotionally. The school also emphasized extracurricular activities like sports, arts, and team-building exercises to foster a sense of normalcy and boost students’ spirits.

A Unified Effort for Success

Headmaster V. Unnikrishnan credits the school’s success to the collective efforts of teachers, parents, students, and the education department. This achievement is a testament to the unwavering strength and determination of the school community, who came together to overcome adversity and excel.

Recognition and Inspiration

Kerala’s Education Minister, V. Sivankutty, congratulated the school for its exceptional achievement. The success of GVHSS Vellarmala’s students serves as an inspiring example of how education, unity, and perseverance can overcome even the greatest tragedies. This achievement is not just academic but a powerful message of hope for all.
